Long time to speak.
When we last left off, i was still an "independent contractor" doing pre-visualization and animation for various films and commercials. I worked on the upcoming films, Fantastic Four, Aloha, The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, and Pete's Dragon.
However, in December I opted to (somewhat) leave the film industry, and accepted the "Digital Arts & Animation Specialist" at Panther Productions; a studio within Chapman University. "But why?" you may ask.
There are many answers to that question. But the short one is that I'm playing the long game. It was becoming clear to me that while I really enjoyed working in the pre-production side of film making, on the path I was on, i would most likely only ever be contributing to other peoples stories and visions. I have, over the years, become increasingly interested in more control. I want to ultimately be able to tell my own stories.
Mind you, i have no idea on how to do that, or if id even be any good at it. But i want to try. I want to grow.
This new position at Chapman affords me an opportunity to invest in that future. It allows me to be more than just a previs artist. Not that there is anything wrong with that! It simply is not my passion to be doing that the rest of my life. So now i have the opportunity to not only stretch my skills into other areas that interest me, such as motion graphics, web, & and broadcast media... but to also take classes in film making. At the same time i actually have a retirement plan that allows me to invest in my and my family's future.
Its a sweet deal!
I work with some amazing people, and i have already gotten to work on some really fun projects. Most recently i crafted ALL the graphics for a web show called the OC Game Review (on YouTube). It was a blast!
The short of this all is... If all goes well, i hopefully will be able to continue stretching my creative wings, all while collecting a steady paycheck. And that folks is a WIN, WIN! So stay tuned to this space in the future. I cant wait to show you what i will be working on. :)
